Health Plan Deduction Update

New health plan rates are effective each year in January.  12-month employees will see any changes in their payroll deduction effective with their December paycheck.  It has been the practice of the District to smooth out medical insurance rate increases for our 10- and 11-month employees.  This “smoothing” means the existing October, November and December premiums are combined with the upcoming year (January - September) premiums for the annual total cost of health benefit premiums.  That total is then divided by 10 or 11 months to determine the monthly payroll deduction for the new school year.

 

This year, “smoothing” will begin with October checks.  This does not change the total employee premiums, only the timing of the deductions.  Most of the health care plans that had rate increases were between 2% to 10% so the change in what you will see for a health care payroll deduction on the October paycheck should be minimal for these plans. One exception may be the Health Net plan, which had a larger rate increase, and employees enrolled in this plan are more likely to see a noticeable difference in their health care deduction.  

 

Please note, if you have submitted an open enrollment health plan change, that new plan rate as of January 1st will also be reflected in the calculation of the deduction on the October paycheck.
