Superintendent's Message
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year and the new DJUSD website! It is our goal to maintain a friendly and well-organized site that offers the timely information you need, while highlighting the accomplishments of our wonderful students. This space will continue to develop; please share your comments and suggestions with us.
This school year promises to be both exciting and challenging. A sound financial foundation for the District remains of highest concern and, staff continues to focus on the mission of making sure our students receive the best education possible. Teachers, support staff and administrators all take great pride in working in a school system and community that produces such outstanding learners. The Davis community expects excellence from its schools, and every year the exceptional people and programs that make up DJUSD deliver. This is often reflected in our schools’ API scores and the individual recognition our students receive.
We want all DJUSD students to be successful and will continue to use assessment data to identify those in need of intervention and provide the services they require. Efforts such as the Unconscious Bias Project, staff training focused on Professional Learning Communities, fostering caring relationships amongst staff, students and their families, and better aligning curricula and assessment will help us to do this.
Despite economic uncertainty, positive attitudes, beliefs, and a relentless passion to help students be successful will carry the day for the school district and the community. Following on the heels of a successful fundraising campaign last spring to restore valued programs placed at risk by a budget shortfall, the community will have an opportunity to secure funding for these programs for three years by approving Measure W on November’s ballot. Fact sheets describing the measure and its impact on our schools are provided on this website.
To be successful in a global society after high school, all children need extensive knowledge and skills in core areas of literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language and career technology. Students must also be exposed to a myriad of opportunities that explore the arts, health and wellness, athletics, extra-curricular activities, and community service projects. These are the components of an excellent education and develop life-long thinkers and productive citizens for our future.
As your superintendent, it is my privilege and honor to partner with the students, staff, parents and local citizens in Davis. I look forward to another exciting year of watching our fine students learn, achieve and grow!
