Greening Our Facilities
The 2008-09 school year marked the beginning of the Green Schools Initiative in the Davis Joint Unified School District. Green Teams and Green Team Leaders were identified at each elementary, junior high and high school campus. A “Profile” of green activities was assembled to highlight each school’s programs and activities, the school board declared May as Green Schools Month, and the First Annual Green Schools Expo was held in Central Park on May 23rd.
Not a bad record for a program that started in the middle of the school year!
• GOING GREENER IN 2009-10 •
We have big plans for this school year. We will continue and build on current programs: Green Teams will be active in each school, May will once again be “Green Schools Month,” and we will have the Second Annual Green Schools Expo in May 2010.
But we want to do more! We are also looking at installing solar systems on school buildings, increasing energy efficiency in how we do business (less money for utility bills, more for the classroom), providing teachers and students with curriculum options and classroom activities, and encouraging more students to bike or walk to school.
