About Green Schools
The Green Schools Initiative at Davis Joint Unified School District is a collaborative effort between the school district, Yolo County, and PG&E to promote environmental education around issues such as energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, water efficiency, and more.
The 2008-09 school year marked the beginning of the Green Schools Initiative. Green Teams and Green Team Leaders were identified at each elementary, junior high and high school campus. A “Profile” of green activities was assembled to highlight each school’s programs and activities, the school board declared May as Green Schools Month, and the First Annual Green Schools Expo was held in Central Park on May 23rd. Not a bad record for a program that started in the middle of the school year!
The Mission
Our kids are our future, and the future of energy is "green." As part of our overall educational mission, Davis Joint Unified School District is committed to educating our students about climate change, global warming, recycling, energy efficiency, and other aspects of sustainability.
The Goal
The goal of the Green Schools Initiative is to establish and nurture a culture of sustainability in our schools.
The Plan
- Create "Green Teams" of students, faculty, staff and parents at each school site
- Provide opportunities for classroom related activities and education
- Make sure our buildings and facilities are energy efficient
- Reduce our energy bills by producing as much power as possible from renewable energy sources
The Green Schools Expo
The Green Schools Initiative will showcase local students' efforts at the 2nd Annual Green Expo on May 22nd. The Green Expo will take place in Central Park during the Saturday farmers' market.
