Hail to the chief!: Politics rule at Da Vinci High School

By Anne Ternus-Bellamy | Enterprise staff writer

Spend a little time on the Da Vinci High School campus these days and you'll think you're in the middle of a heated presidential campaign.

The posters are everywhere touting this candidate or that — some 20 candidates, in fact — though their political affiliations may be a little unfamiliar: The Donner Party; the Scraper Party, the Rasta Party. Actually, make that the Rasta Partii.

Called “Hail to the Chief,” the 10-week-long project has seniors forming their own political parties, complete with presidential candidate, vice presidential candidate, economics adviser, campaign manager and press secretary. They make campaign videos, attack ads and posters, create a national budget, take positions on the issues and more.

Students will continue working on the project for the next couple of weeks. Upcoming events include a vice presidential candidate debate and a big finale in which each of the presidential candidates delivers a speech to the entire school.
