I feel honored to greet you as the new superintendent of the Davis Joint Unified School District to say welcome back to the new school year! I look forward to meeting you and hope you will introduce yourself if you see me out and about at school sites or in town.  I am getting to know Davis, which is a wonderful community.

The Davis Joint Unified School District is a leading center of educational innovation.  Our mission is to ignite a love of learning and equip each student with the knowledge, skills, character, and well-being to thrive and contribute to an evolving and increasingly-connected world.

Every day I spend meeting the families, community members and business owners in our district reconfirms for me that DJUSD is home to a vibrant family of excellent schools and programs for our students. Thank you for your many contributions that make this possible.

The successful opening of school depends on a tremendous amount of hard work that goes on over the summer. Principals, teachers and our classified staff are hard at work preparing for the start of school and we look forward to welcoming your children into our classrooms.

School climate is a critical component in the formation of schools and classrooms where students thrive. DJUSD has made great strides in identifying, sharing and implementing best practices that promote equity and restorative practices across the District. I want to thank our teachers, principals and other staff for their efforts in building positive school culture and climate for our students, and I look forward to our continued work in this area. Students do best when they feel they are in a physically and emotionally safe and secure learning environment, and our collective commitment to this idea positively impacts students each day.

I am keenly interested in your views about our district and hope you will email me at superintendent@djusd.net with your answers to the following questions:

  1. What is something great going on in DJUSD?
  2. What is something in DJUSD that could use a second look?
  3. What is something new you would like to see the district try?
  4. Imagine it is five years in the future — describe your dream newspaper headline for DJUSD.

Thank you for entrusting your children to our schools and for your continued involvement in their education. We look forward to a terrific 2016-17 school year!
