Holiday Message From The Superintendent
Posted by: Madison Shumway Published: 12/21/17

As the year 2017 draws to a close, I want to wish you and your loved ones a peaceful and Happy New Year. This has been a special year in Davis Joint Unified on all our campuses. We continue to make a difference in students' lives, expand opportunities through dedication, innovation and creativity, and form new and improved connections within our communities. At the very heart of our important work is finding ways to build an inclusive and welcoming culture where everyone feels safe and belongs. In brief, it means aligning our policies, procedures, messaging and resources both academic (for our teachers and students) and for our community to build a safe and supportive environment. Student voice remains central to this work; we continue to closely listen to their perspectives on the effectiveness of efforts taking place in classrooms and on our campuses.

Also this year, we welcomed new faces to our school staff and student bodies and said good-bye to those who have been dear to our hearts and schools. We broke ground on new buildings including the All Student Center soon to open its doors at Davis Senior High School, and we proudly advanced our efforts for building a restorative culture in response to harm and conflict. We displayed extraordinary talent and grit on the sports field, on the stage, in the robotics lab, and in auditoriums and music halls across Davis and beyond. We found new sources to remain fiscally sustainable and we formalized our commitment to close the regional compensation gap for employees.

After a full year and half within this district, I continue to be amazed by the skills, dedication and efforts by our staff and the committed and sustained contributions from our community in support of our students and schools. While there are no easy answers to closing the achievement gap, to solving our regional compensation gap or to defining 21st century learning and facilities, we will make extraordinary strides if we work on these challenges together. I want to thank all of our DJUSD employees for their unyielding commitment to all students. Davis Joint Unified is defined not just by its scores and accolades but by the culture and content of character of the people who comprise it.

Enjoy this holiday season and a restful school break. I look forward to promises of the new year.

Greatest regards,

John A. Bowes, Ed. D

John A. Bowes, Ed. D

Superintendente
