Here's to a great year ahead!

Welcome back! I hope your family enjoyed the summer and had time to rest, recharge and reconnect. Over the past week, it has been a joy to visit our campuses and see the smiling faces of students, families and staff as we kicked off another great year.

first dayThe start of a new school year has reminded me of the strength of our community and the promise it holds for our students. In these first days, I’ve seen students reconnecting with friends, exploring new learning opportunities and stepping into their routines with energy and excitement, as well as staff engaging with students and colleagues across the District.

These moments highlight not only the joy of growth and discovery, but also the responsibility we share in guiding our DJUSD community through both opportunities and challenges. It is this balance, our optimism for what lies ahead and our commitment to facing obstacles together, that makes me confident in the year ahead of us.

poolOne area of visible growth is our Bond Program projects. Over the summer, new Early Learning classrooms were completed at Korematsu, Montgomery, North Davis, Pioneer and Willett Elementary Schools, just in time to support the launch of full-day kindergarten and Universal TK. In addition, the long-anticipated Davis Senior High School Aquatic Center is nearly complete and on track to open in the coming weeks. A big thank you to Davis voters, who made these projects possible with the passage of Measure M and I am happy to report that every one of our Bond projects have been completed on schedule and under budget!

UDLIn the classroom, our focus continues to be on ensuring every student has what they need to succeed. This work is guided by our DJUSD Strategic Plan. This year, teachers continue to build their skills in Universal Design for Learning and strategies to reduce barriers, through a year-long series of professional development activities and collaboration. Just last week, our District hosted nearly 500 employees for a professional development day to continue this work. These efforts help us create learning environments where all students can reach their potential.

At the same time, our District continues to face challenges with declining enrollment and limited state funding. As one of the lowest-funded districts in California, we must budget carefully while balancing our priorities of employee compensation, excellent educational programs and fiscal solvency. While full-day kindergarten and TK have provided some relief, without new housing in Davis, enrollment challenges will persist.

enrollment dataOver the past five years the District has declined by approximately 300 students and has made associated budget reductions to ensure fiscal solvency. We expect to decline an additional 1000 students over the next decade if enrollment trends continue. As a result, we must begin worst case planning for the possibility of significant restructuring if enrollment does not substantively increase. Later this fall we will begin, what will be a very challenging community conversation about how to restructure the District to accommodate a student population that is much smaller. We will continue to keep families and the community informed when the community outreach process begins later this fall.

Through all of this, one thing remains constant: our students are at the heart of everything we do. They inspire us each day to teach, support and lead with compassion and purpose.

advisoryLast year, I convened a Superintendent’s Student Advisory to combat dehumanizing language, symbols and behavior in response to on-going racist, antisemitic and discriminatory incidents across the District. These student leaders have been powerful partners in shaping our response and helping us move forward into the 2025-26 School year. Together, our team created the “Know Better. Do Better. Be Better.” campaign, which we are launching this school year. The campaign includes a pledge for students, staff and families to learn about dehumanizing language and symbols and to commit to interrupting and/or reporting them when they occur. You will be receiving more information soon about how families can take part in this important effort in the first weeks of school.

first day of school¡Bienvenido! Espero que su familia haya disfrutado del verano y haya tenido tiempo para descansar, recargar energías y reconectarse. Durante la semana pasada, ha sido un placer visitar nuestros campus y ver las caras sonrientes de los estudiantes, las familias y el personal al comenzar otro gran año. El comienzo de un nuevo año escolar me ha recordado la fortaleza de nuestra comunidad y la promesa que tiene para nuestros estudiantes. En estos primeros días, he visto a los estudiantes reconectarse con amigos, explorar nuevas oportunidades de aprendizaje y empezar sus rutinas con energía y entusiasmo, así como al personal interactuar con estudiantes y colegas en todo el distrito.

Estos momentos resaltan no solo la alegría del crecimiento y el descubrimiento, sino también la responsabilidad que compartimos al guiar a nuestra comunidad de DJUSD a través de oportunidades y desafíos. Este equilibrio es nuestro optimismo por lo que nos espera y nuestro compromiso de enfrentar juntos los obstáculos, lo que me hace confiar en el año que tenemos por delante.

poolUn área de crecimiento visible son nuestros proyectos del programa de bonos. Durante el verano, se completaron nuevas aulas de aprendizaje temprano en las escuelas primarias Korematsu, Montgomery, North Davis, Pioneer y Willett, justo a tiempo para apoyar el lanzamiento del jardín de infantes de día completo y TK universal. Además, el tan esperado centro acuático de Davis Senior High School está casi completo y en camino de abrir en las próximas semanas. ¡Un gran agradecimiento a los votantes de Davis, que hicieron posible estos proyectos con la aprobación de la medida M y me complace informar que cada uno de nuestros proyectos de bonos se ha completado a tiempo y por debajo del presupuesto!

Este año, los maestros continúan desarrollando sus habilidades en diseño universal para el aprendizaje y estrategias para reducir las barreras, a través de una serie de actividades de desarrollo profesional y colaboración de un año de duración. Como uno de los distritos con fondos más bajos de California, debemos presupuestar cuidadosamente mientras equilibramos nuestras prioridades de compensación de empleados, excelentes programas educativos y solvencia fiscal. Si bien el jardín de infantes de día completo y TK han brindado cierto alivio, sin nuevas viviendas en Davis, persistirán los desafíos de inscripción. En los últimos cinco años, el Distrito ha disminuido en aproximadamente 300 estudiantes y ha realizado reducciones presupuestarias asociadas para garantizar la solvencia fiscal. Se espera una disminución de 1000 estudiantes adicionales durante la próxima década si continúan las tendencias de inscripción. advisoryEl año pasado, convoqué una asesoría estudiantil del superintendente para combatir el lenguaje, los símbolos y el comportamiento deshumanizantes en respuesta a los continuos incidentes racistas, antisemitas y discriminatorios en todo el distrito. Estos líderes estudiantiles han sido compañeros poderosos para dar forma a nuestra respuesta y ayudarnos a avanzar hacia el año escolar 2025-26. Juntos, nuestro equipo creó la campaña "Conocer mejor. Hacer mejor. Ser mejor", que estamos lanzando este año escolar. La campaña incluye un compromiso para que los estudiantes, el personal y las familias aprendan sobre el lenguaje y los símbolos deshumanizantes y se comprometan a interrumpirlos y/o denunciarlos cuando ocurran.
