The Housing-School Connection

Dear DJUSD Community,

I hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating spring break. With the end of the school year on the horizon, I want to share an important update with you regarding the future of our District.

As you may know, DJUSD has been experiencing declining enrollment for two decades and is now at a critical juncture for decision-making. Without new housing development, DJUSD is forecasted to drop another 1000 students in ten years and will need a significant restructure. This will include school closure(s), consolidation(s), boundary rebalancing and/or school model adjustment(s).

With that being said, schools must become part of the local housing discussion. In an effort to move that conversation forward, I am leading an educational outreach roadshow, meeting with over 75 community and school groups, to discuss DJUSD’s declining enrollment and how new housing development projects, if approved by voters, will impact boundaries and mitigate the drop in students. Unless something changes, we will see the steady erosion of our Davis schools.

La conexión entre vivienda y escuela, y lo que significa para nuestro Distrito

Estimada comunidad de DJUSD,

Espero que todos hayan tenido unas descansadas y rejuvenecedoras vacaciones de primavera. Con el fin del año escolar en el horizonte, deseo compartir con ustedes importantes noticias en relación al futuro de nuestro Distrito.

Como ustedes sabrán, las últimas dos décadas DJUSD ha estado experimentando una disminución en las inscripciones, y ahora estamos en un momento crítico para tomar decisiones. Sin nuevos proyectos habitacionales, se prevé que DJUSD va a tener 1000 estudiantes menos en 10 años, y vamos a tener que hacer una importante reestructuración. Esto incluirá el cierre de escuela(s), consolidación(es), balance de límites y/o ajustes de modelos de escuela.

Debido a ésto, las escuelas deben tomar parte en la discusión local sobre viviendas. En un esfuerzo por hacer avanzar la conversación, estoy dirigiendo un programa educacional itinerante reuniéndome con más de 75 grupos comunitarios y escolares, para hablar sobre la declinación de la inscripción en DJUSD y como nuevos proyectos de desarrollo habitacional, si son aprobados por los votantes, impactarían los límites y mitigarían la disminución en el número en estudiantes. Veremos una continua erosión en nuestras escuelas de Davis, a menos que algo cambie.
