Dancing with and in front of others can be challenging for some people but students at Holmes Junior High have increased their confidence and collaboration skills through learning how to swing dance.  After learning some basics of swing dance, Holmes PE Teachers, Mr. Nush and Ms. Dufresne, challenge their students to collaborate in order to compose the choreography and perform in a grade-level swing dance competition. The collaboration is significant as students must communicate effectively, respectfully build on each other’s ideas, work through differing opinions, and demonstrate empathy to ensure shared comfort and responsibility for the finished routine. Then, they must physically collaborate through their movements to demonstrate a coherent performance. Being a good collaborator is just as important as dance technique in order to achieve the winning spot.

"Swing dance allows the students to get out of their comfort zone while continuing to collaborate in an atmosphere that all students learn to enjoy. Plus, they might need this at a wedding or special event someday"

“I like to dance outside of school. This allowed me to do something I love while working with others and having fun.”

"Teaching swing dance to middle school students fosters creativity, builds confidence, and encourages teamwork. It not only helps them develop a sense of rhythm and physical coordination, but also instills important life skills like communication, patience, and respect, all while having fun in a supportive and engaging environment."

"I love the Holmes dance unit! Watching the students work together to create line dances and perform them to music with creativity and fun is so rewarding. Add on the tradition this school has of an incredible swing dance competition and there are so many amazing students that showcase their talents during this fun 3-week unit."
