Whether they were an experienced rider or a brand new to biking, every second-grade student at North Davis Elementary (NDE) was challenged to improve their
adaptability and resilience through the annual Bike Skills Training Day in partnership with The Bike Campaign. This past October, the NDE blacktop was converted into a bike course, complete with replica street signs and intersections. Some students were supported with the very basics of learning to ride while other more experienced students learned about using signals and safety rules to increase bike safety. Students learned about their role and responsibility in making Davis a bike safe town. New riders were challenged with the difficult task of balancing, pedaling and being aware of their surroundings. Experienced riders needed to change their priority from biking for fun to also biking for safety. Every student had the challenge of pushing past personal barriers to meet the goal of improving their biking skills and safety, and they had fun doing it!

"
I enjoyed seeing kids who didn't initially know how to do something, work really hard and turn that hard work into success. It was really inspiring, and I could see the pride students had in doing something that was hard for them."

 "
It was a fun day because we got to get exercise, get some cool skills, and get good at biking. I pretty much enjoyed everything about doing it but it was a little hard to learn to ride a bike that was a little bigger than what I was used to."

"Students who were already confident bikers, were able to adapt their skills and improve their abilities by learning to follow street signs, correctly fit their helmets, and be safe riders around others. Students kept saying ‘Ms. Pinto, Ms.Valedepena, look at me!’"
- Rebecca Pinto (NDE Principal) ___________________________________________________________________
"We needed to learn to put our hands out to show where we are going. I had to get comfortable with putting my hands up and down to make my signals."
- Jody (Second Grader) ___________________________________________________________________
"It was really important because some kids didn’t know how to ride bikes. I realized that when you practice, it starts to feel fun. I was a little nervous, but the adults helped me feel confident and then I started going pretty fast!"
-Malani, Second Grader
