As educators, we all hope to see students show initiative and create community at their school. Fifth and sixth grade students at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary are doing this with the support of Counselor Luna Flynn, Maestro Richard Brickman, and Maestra Cristina Martinez. The leadership staff have helped this group of student leaders unleash their creativity and innovation in order to solve problems and act on creative ideas.

Each Thursday, this crew meets to discuss ideas that bubble up within the student body and figure out how to bring them to life. Through this deliberate process, the Leadership Group is creating connections among students through fun and purposeful events. Early in the year, students were discussing a students -only afternoon dance in the MPR. While there had been student and parent dances in the past, this was new and different, and students challenged the status quo to come up with a plan for their own dance. It was a success with student-created decorations, tasty snacks, a DJ, and photo booth, all of which were student-driven ideas.

In the fall, students were noting the lack of organized sports and games. They explored multiple possibilities for raising funds to purchase additional sports equipment. Eventually, they decided to partner with the PTA to hold an afternoon bake sale and raised over $500 to purchase new equipment.

By harnessing student creativity and innovation, these student leaders are continually improving the processes and products that encompass the experiences of Montgomery students. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
