Ms. Lindsay and Mr. Rooney’s Ag Students Open & Close with Strong Communication

Communication

When you think of Agriculture, you might not initially imagine students demonstrating strong   public  speaking skills but that’s not the case with Davis Agriculture students. Every year, Davis FFA students look forward to the Yolo Section FFA Opening & Closing Contest, a tradition that brings together students from across the county to celebrate leadership and public speaking. Both Davis Senior High and Emerson Junior High students had the chance to demonstrate their knowledge of official FFA procedures while building public speaking and teamwork skills.

The contest gives students the opportunity to practice speaking with clarity and listening actively. Students must use precise language in order to effectively apply FFA procedures. When they deliver their speech they must demonstrate confidence and the ability to know their audience and keep the purpose in mind. Preparation includes memorizing the official ceremonies, rehearsing with teammates, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and coordinating timing and gestures for smooth, professional performances.

Five teams of six students each represented Davis FFA: one officer team, three advanced high school teams, and one junior high team. Competing against nearly 500 students from seven Yolo County schools, students earned top honors, including Champion Advanced Team, 4th place Officer Team, and Star Awards for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sentinel.
This annual contest is a perfect example of students putting communication, collaboration, and leadership into action while under pressure. It builds confidence, teamwork, and real-world skills that extend beyond the classroom, preparing students to succeed in school, FFA, and their future careers.

The Opening & Closing Contest is our first speaking contest of the year! I love watching students rehearse and get comfortable trying out public speaking. It’s such an important skill in FFA, and this contest gives them a strong, safe start to build confidence and develop their abilities. - Ms. Lindsay- Miller (Ag Teacher)

"Through the Opening and Closing ceremony contest, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about speaking the words— it’s about understanding their meaning, working as a team, and showing pride in the FFA traditions that connect us all throughout the community." - Gianna (11th Grade)

“Its really nice to get involved and see what’s going on in our Section. Opening and Closing is a good event to see people from other chapters. I was able to get in touch with people I went to elementary school with who are also in FFA at other schools and have similar interests” – Arabella (12th Grade)

“Students have been practicing for months for opening & closing. It showed through their confidence and excitement for the competition. Every team excelled in their division!
