Allergies / Anaphylaxis - Stock Epinephrine

In accordance with Education Code 49414 and Board Policy 5141.21, all school sites have stock epinephrine delivery devices on hand to respond to anaphylaxis in persons who do not have emergency medication on site or who have not been previously diagnosed with an allergy.

Cardiac Emergencies - AEDs

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's an easy-to-use medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death for student athletes, and the cause of more than 320,000 total sudden cardiac deaths in the United States every year.

There is at least one AED on every District campus, school sites have at least 2 depending upon the size of the campus. DJUSD staff train, run drills, and have a written plan specific to each site to address cardiac emergencies as part of our Heart Safe Schools designations.

In collaboration with UC Davis Children's Hospital and Project ADAM Sacramento, all campuses throughout the District have been designated Heart Safe Schools.

Opioid Overdose - Stock Naloxone (Narcan)

All DJSUD school sites have access to naloxone, which is the medication that can reverse a fentanyl (or other opioid) overdose and save a life.

DJUSD Health Services staff are all trained to recognize the signs of opioid overdose and use naloxone. Credentialed School Nurses have also trained teachers, administrator and staff members to do the same.

Naloxone is readily available on all DJUSD campuses, attached to all AEDs.
