Elementary Music Programs
What Music Options Are Available to Elementary Students?

TK–3rd Grade: General Music
All students in TK–3rd grade receive 30 minutes of general music instruction each week. Students explore foundational concepts such as rhythm, pitch, instrument families, sound production, and music notation, building musical skills and appreciation.

4th Grade: Strings and Choir
Students may choose to learn violin, viola, cello, or bass, or join their school’s choir. Beginning instrumentalists learn in small groups organized by instrument. Choir students develop vocal technique, singing skills, and musicianship. These voluntary, 30–45-minute pull-out classes take place during the school day. Students are responsible for making up any missed classwork.

5th–6th Grade: Band, Strings, and Choir
Beginning in 5th grade, students may also choose band, with options including flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion (bells and snare drum). Beginning instrumentalists learn in small groups by instrument. In their second year, instrumentalists join band or orchestra ensembles to develop ensemble skills and make music together.

6th Grade: All-City Music Groups
Sixth graders may participate in All-City Band or All-City Orchestra, joining students from across the district. Both groups meet Wednesdays from 2:00–3:00 p.m. on early-release days. All-City Choir is open to any 4th–6th grade student enrolled in a music pull-out program, providing an additional opportunity to sing without missing more instructional time.
