DJUSD Board Votes to Put Parcel Tax Renewal on March 2024 Ballot

parcel tax logoDear DJUSD community,

With the existing Measure H parcel tax set to expire in June 2025, the DJUSD Board of Trustees voted at last night’s Board meeting to place a parcel tax renewal measure on the March 2024 ballot. This measure, if approved, would continue to provide approximately $11.7 million each year for our District, until ended by voters.

DJUSD passed its first parcel tax in 1984, and the continuous existence of the parcel tax is instrumental in helping to provide equity and excellence in our District and to delivering exceptional programs and services that have come to define a Davis education.

Specifically, the parcel tax provides support for academics in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), strong reading and writing instruction, world language and arts, curriculum, access to robust athletic offerings, critical counseling and nursing resources, library services and co-curricular programs including robotics, journalism, theater, debate and more. These programs are closely aligned with our strategic plan’s four goals: student well-being and belonging; equitable access and opportunity; student engagement and continuous academic growth, and the desired outcome of our graduates leaving DJUSD confident and prepared for life.

Without access to this funding, our schools would lose nearly $12 million annually, which would likely lead to teacher layoffs (1 in 5 teachers is parcel tax-funded) and cuts to programs. As with Measure H, the parcel tax renewal funding would be used solely for the services and programs mentioned above and would never be used for contract management salaries. Senior citizen homeowners would retain their existing exemption from the cost of the measure without needing to reapply, and exemptions for residents with disabilities would continue with no reapprovals necessary.

Thank you for your ongoing support for our students. To learn more about the parcel tax, please visit www.djusd.net/parceltax.
