Sticky Keys

Ever get the annoying image below? Well, it is actually an accessibility feature that has been built into electronic devices since Apple released Mac OS System 6 in 1988. Users who have a physical disability or repetitive strain injury can click SHIFT 5 times on their keyboard. Sticky keys simulates keystrokes instead of having to press multiple keys at the same time.

Display Contrast

Macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataract examples

Macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and dyslexia and are some of the disabilities that have a hard time seeing images and text on screens. Using a "high contrast" filter on your screen to help the clarity of the text and images on an electronic device's screen. See Microsoft's support article on how to change your Windows 10 device to "high contrast" mode. For Google Chrome or a Chromebook use the high contrast extension

Mono vs Stereo Sound

Stereo Sound and Mono Sound

If you are hard of hearing changing your sound output from stereo to mono can help make voice and other sounds easier to hear.

  • Monaural Sound
    • One single audio channel is used
    • Reproduced through several speakers for crisper voices
  • Stereophonic Sound
    • Two audios channels are used
    • Can be hard to hear both channels if the user is hard of hearing out of one or both ears

For Windows devices:

  • Open Settings
  • Head to Ease of Access and click "Audio" under "Hearing" on the left.
  • On the right, enable the option "Turn on mono audio" under "Make your device easier to hear"
