March 31 - DJUSD Schools to Remain Closed Through May 1
Posted on 03/31/2020
schools closed through may 1

Dear DJUSD Community,

Today, in order to continue efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community, and pursuant to the “Stay at Home” orders issued by Governor Newsom and by Yolo County, I am announcing that Davis Joint Unified School District schools will remain closed until May 1. This decision has been made after close consultation and coordination with Yolo County Public Health, Yolo County Office of Education and other Superintendents from Yolo County school districts. In a recommendation issued earlier, Superintendent Garth Lewis of Yolo County Office of Education stated, “Physical distancing continues to be the best strategy to achieve our collective goal of flattening the curve associated with the spread of COVID-19. The safety and wellness of students, families, school personnel, and the community is our highest priority.”

As a school district, we understand that we play a key role in contributing to public health mitigation efforts. We also recognize that the safety and well-being of students, staff and our entire community is a collective responsibility. As we near our new return to school date of Monday, May 4, we will be closely monitoring and reevaluating the conditions, and we will be consulting with our regional and public health partners to make the best decisions with updated information.

In the meantime, we will be launching DJUSD’s Distance Learning Program upon our return from Spring Break on Monday, April 13. An update will be provided to the Board of Education on Thursday of this week. Please watch for more specific details and resources about Distance Learning for parents and students in my next Superintendent message at the end of this week. I do want to acknowledge and thank the community for your ongoing support and thoughtful feedback about Distance Learning planning and our school closure. Each family situation is unique and we are listening to each of you and doing the very best to serve all of you. We continue to be interested in parent and community feedback. If you have ideas to share about Distance Learning in DJUSD, please email [email protected].

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding in these challenging times. Please take a moment to review the important reminders below. Stay well, stay home and please watch for more information from me, your principal and your child’s teachers in the near term.

Sincerely,

John A. Bowes, Ed.D.
Superintendent

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Chromebooks Available for Families in Need First
We want all students to be ready to engage with their teachers during school closures through our Distance Learning Program. While not all courses for every grade level will be exclusively online, it is important for all students to have internet access and the tools necessary to participate. To this end, our Technology Department has a check-out process for Chromebooks. The Chromebook check-out is intended for r families in need, who do not have a connection to the internet or a device at home for their students. Families who would like to request a Chromebook for their student should visit a check-out station Monday through Friday, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., until April 3, 2020. Please bring your child’s DJUSD Student ID # (lunch number). Chromebook check-out locations include Harper Junior High, Patwin Elementary and Montgomery Elementary.

We are also working to provide a solution for homes without internet access. Please contact us at (530) 757-5300 x117 if you or someone you know needs this support. For more information and updated Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), with information in English and Spanish, visit our Chromebook and Internet Access webpage.

Meals Service Continues through Spring Break
As an essential service, DJUSD will continue to serve meals to children, 18 and under, through Spring Break and until school reopens. Meal packages include lunch for the current day and breakfast for the next morning. Meal service is occurring Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the following school sites:
  • Montgomery Elementary - 1441 Danbury Street, Davis, CA 95618
  • Harper Junior High - 4000 E. Covell Blvd., Davis, CA 95618
  • Davis Senior High - Pick up in the parking lot off Oak Avenue, behind the All Student Center.
  • Patwin Elementary - 2222 Shasta Drive, Davis, CA 95616

Identification is not required for meal pick up. Updates will be posted on our COVID-19 website.

Stay Home - Save Lives - Stay Healthy
Staying home means more time with family. This is not a time for playdates, day trips or sleepovers which can be particularly hard for young children or teens. Do find ways to connect socially; use virtual tools, if possible, to connect with family and friends near and far, but reserve equal time to unplug and destress. Stay physically active. There is an entire online community offering creative ways to move and reduce the anxiety of being cooped up all day. Change and isolation can be stressful for many people; allow yourself time to adjust and set up your new “normal.” Determine the best schedule for you and your family that allows for flexibility, but still gives some structure. We all feel more secure when we can predict what comes next. Be mindful of the news you are watching and limit your child’s exposure. The DJUSD Social Emotional Learning page has information about how to talk to your child about the news. If you or your child are struggling, the DJUSD Mental Health & Wellness page has resources to support you and your family.

Keeping you Informed - Website Translation
As part of our effort to reach every student and family member in our community, we are making a concerted effort to keep our www.djusd.net/coronavirus website updated with all the important information and resources that pertain to COVID-19 and school closures. As part of our efforts to make all DJUSD websites as accessible and user-friendly as possible, each District and school website has a translate function in the top right corner of the websites under ‘Language.’ Drop down that menu to view dozens of language options and watch the entire website translate to your desired language. As you support your neighbors and community members, we encourage you to share this feature with those who may find it helpful.

Volunteering in this Time of Need
We remain focused on meeting our students most essential needs, and are grateful for the partnership of our community. Many of you have asked how to support schools and DJUSD families through this crisis. With the Governor’s Stay at Home order in place, we all need to find new ways to support our children and each other. Here are some of the resources we have found most helpful for volunteering and more:

Board of Education Meeting
Important information about our COVID-19 response and our Distance Learning Program will take place at our scheduled Board of Education meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. The health, well-being, and public safety of community members, public officials, and employees remain the top priority for DJUSD. Consistent with the Shelter in Place orders from the Governor and Yolo County, in-person attendance in Community Chambers for the public will not be permitted.

Please know that the meeting will be available for viewing and you can watch the meeting live on cable television on DJUSD Education Channel 17 or stream the meeting live. Likewise, while a public comment period is included in each regular meeting, and know you can submit questions to the Board of Education at any time by emailing [email protected] - your comments will be read by our Trustees and me and play an important role in informing our work.

Please watch for important updates from me coming next week, and please be sure to tune in to our Board of Education meeting to learn about our Distance Learning online instruction program.

Atentamente,

John A. Bowes, Ed.D.
Superintendente

RECORDATORIOS IMPORTANTES

  • Escuela Primaria Montgomery: 1441 Danbury Street, Davis, CA 95618
  • Harper: 4000 E. Covell Blvd., Davis, CA 95618
  • Escuela Primaria Patwin: 2222 Shasta Drive, Davis, CA 95616

Manténgase activos a nivel físico.
